- Introduction to the Customized Integrated Spelling and
- Phonetical Library (CISPL).
- The CISPL has been in use in Colorado School Districts
- since 1988 where they have been found to be very successful
- in helping children learn to spell and read. Furthermore
- the operation of these programs are so easy that first
- graders easily master them after only a few minutes.
- And now that they are available to the public, they
- have also been made to work with many different sound
- devices. With the sound devices you can record your own
- voice to the words or purchase voice files.
- However, the CISPL contains many features which make
- it much more than just another published spelling program
- restricted to one preselected word lists. The CISPL can
- incorporate any words, especially your child's or students'
- spelling words, when you order the CUSTOMIZER program.
- All of the seven programs available in the Customized
- Integrated Spelling and Phonetical Library (CISPL); ANTS,
- CUSTOMIZER, CUSTOM SPELL, SAVE THE GATOR, SCRAMBLE,
- SEAWORD, and WORDFIND, provide instructional variety that
- help your child master the basic phonetical rules of
- reading and spelling, do extremely well on their weekly
- spelling tests, and also entertain them. Print OVER.DOC
- for overview of all seven programs.
- All the programs have networkable versions. The
- networkable versions can manage up to 45 teachers and each
- teacher may have as many as 60 lists. These lists can be
- utilized in all of the spelling programs. A major network
- advantage of these programs is that you can quickly
- preselect the program set-up options at ONE workstation for
- all the workstations.

- Introduction to ANTS:
- ANTS is a graphic game where the child unscrambles
- spelling words by controlling an animated ant. The object
- of the game is to drag the letters into anthills and spell
- a specific word. The letters for that word are scattered
- at random across the computer's screen. Letters are
- snatched by the ant's pincers and then dragged into
- anthills. If the word is spelled before time runs out, Ant
- City is built. If the word is not spelled before time runs
- out, a gigantic tennis shoe comes crashing down and ...,
- well let's just say the ant isn't too happy with your
- ability to spell. ANTS uses the same word lists as CUSTOM
- SPELL. It may be helpful to run the program at the same
- time as you read this manual.
- ___________________________________________________________
- Run Commands for ANTS
- Type ANTS to run program ANTS.
- ___________________________________________________________
- To Begin ANTS
- 1. Enter the number of words you want to use in the
- program.
- 2. If you have a sound device, you will be asked if you
- want to have the word spoken first. Of course it
- is more of a challenge if you don't have the word
- spoken
- 3. At the next screen you have the following options:
- A. If you already know how to play ANTS, drag the
- "Y" down into the anthill to begin play
- immediately.
- B. Press the F1 key if you want directions.
- C. Wait 15 seconds for directions.
- ___________________________________________________________
- To Play ANTS
- 1. Move the ant using the four cursor arrow keys or the
- mouse. (It is easier to control the ant using the
- four cursor arrow keys)
- 2. Pick up a letter by positioning the ant just below
- the letter and pressing the space bar or a mouse
- button once. Pressing the space bar or a mouse
- button a second time will cause the ant to release
- the letter.
- 3. Move the ant and the letter all the way down into an
- empty anthill. If the letter is inserted into
- correct anthill, it will remain. If the letter is
- inserted into the wrong anthill, it will pop back to
- its original position.
- 4. If the word is spelled before the ant timeline
- expires, the ant goes to Ant City and the Ant Speed
- increases, giving you less time to unscramble the
- next word.
- 5. If the word is not spelled before the ant timeline
- expires, a gigantic shoe nearly smashes the ant. The
- Ant Speed decreases, giving you more time to
- unscramble the next word.

- To Quit ANTS press the ESC key.
- ___________________________________________________________
- To Change Options (word lists) for ANTS
- To change word lists press function key F1 to select the
- options menu.
- 1. Enter the number of the list you want to use.
- 2. Press the Y key to confirm this list to be used in
- ANTS or press the N key or the F2 key to go back and
- choose another list.
- 3. Recording Option (Available Only With A Sound
- Device) Go to Recording Option, Page 5.
- 4. The program resumes at the start.
-
- ___________________________________________________________
- Recording Option (Available Only With A Supported Sound
- Device)
- 1. The word to record is displayed.
- 2. The computer counts down from three to one.
- 3. When the screen clears and the word appears in bold
- letters, say the word immediately.
- 4. The computer will repeat the word.
- 5. Press the R key to record the word again or press
- the C key to continue with the next word.

- Sound Options.
- ANTS will automatically detect Sound Blaster and most
- compatibles. If it does not, follow the directions below.
- To select or change Sound Adapter press CTRL + S and
- then follow the directions on the screen.
- For Sound Blaster and compatibles make sure the I/O
- address, the Interrupt, and the DMA channel are correct.
- Some compatibles use a different interrupt and a different
- DMA channel when they are emulating Sound Blaster than they
- use during normal operation. Check your sound board manual
- for compatibility directions. Also some compatibles
- require that you set the recording level. If you can not
- hear your recording, check your manual on how to raise the
- recording level.
- For DigiSpeech you must first load the driver using
- LWDIGI.EXE. I suggest combining the LWDIGI.EXE with
- ANTS.EXE in a batch file.
- ANTS and all other programs will work on networks
- that have both IBM Speech Adapters and DigiSpeech speech
- adapters. When using the sound selection option, select
- either the IBM Speech Adapter or the DigiSpeech adapter.
- ANTS will automatically detect which speech
- adapter is being used as long as the DigiSpeech work
- stations have the driver loaded using LWDIGI.EXE.

- Creating or Purchasing more Word and Voice Files
- The word and voice files supplied with ANTS provide
- a phonetical start for short vowel sounds, long vowel sounds
- as well as the beginning and ending consonant sounds.
- There are other levels you can order. Each level covers
- more complex phonetical skills as well as reviewing
- phonetical skill presented in earlier levels. Each level
- contains 15 lists. If you order other levels you will get
- a complete (Level 1).
- You can create your own word and voice files if you
- purchase the CUSTOMIZER. If you create word and voice
- files that you feel others would want, I would be
- interested in looking at them and listening to them.
- If I marketed the lists, the revenues would be shared.
-
- ___________________________________________________________
- Creating Word & Voice Files for Foreign Languages
- As the word custom implies, the Customized Integrated
- Spelling and Phonetical Library can even be customized to
- different languages. If the language doesn't utilize the
- same 26 alphabet characters as the English language, I can
- customize all the programs to most languages. A fee would
- have to be negotiated.
- If you create word and voice lists in another language,
- I would be very interested in looking at them and listening
- to them. If I marketed the lists, the revenues would be
- shared.
